Types of Epilepsy and treatment as per Ayurveda

-In this post, we will describe the various types of Epilepsy in Ayurveda.  In Ayurveda- Epilepsy is called Apasmara. Apasmara has two meaning described by renowned Ayurveda experts. One of them says it to be Loss of consciousness(Apa means loss and smara means consciousness) and next says it to be the loss of Memory (Apa meaning destroy and smara means memory).


 

Below are the types of Epilepsy according to Ayurveda – 

This classification is given by Charak on the basis of different Dashas of the body.

 

  • Types of Epilepsy #1 – Vataja

According to the experts with this type, Epilepsy occurs because of disturbance in Vata.  The different symptoms in this type of Epilepsy are as follows –

  • The fits come every 12 days

  • Convulsions and repeated seizures

  • Seeing straight

  • Unusual moaning sounds

  • Foam from mouth

  • Unsteady head

  • Stretching of hands and feet

  • Pain in the head

  • Increased deep breathing

  • Grinding of teeth

  • Pain in the chest region, and

  • Eyes bulging out

 

  • Types of Epilepsy #2 – Pitaja

The abnormality in Pitta is responsible for this type of Epilepsy. The different symptoms in this type of Epilepsy are as follows –

  • The fits come in 15 days

  • Repeated seizures at short intervals

  • Sweating and fainting attacks

  • Seeing fierce, shining and frightening objects

  • Yellowish foam from the mouth

  • A sensation of hot surroundings

  • Increased thirst

  • The yellow color of the face, eyes, and skin

  • Restlessness

  • Shortly repeated attacks and quick recovery

 

Types of Epilepsy #3 – Kaphaja

In this type, the main reason for Epilepsy is the abnormal presentation of Kapha. The symptoms of this type of Epilepsy are as follows-

  • Long gaps between seizures

  • Delayed recovery of consciousness

  • Fainting

  • Increased watering of the mouth

  • Increased phlegm

  • Whitish nails, face, and skin

  • A sensation of cold

  • Heaviness in the body, and eyes

  • Erection of hairs of the skin

  • Nausea

  • Sleeplessness

  • An aura of white shadow in the body

  • White foam from the mouth

 

Types of Epilepsy #3 – Sannipataja

The combination of the above three types of Epilepsy cause Sannipataja. All the above-mentioned symptoms of epilepsy overlap each other. The symptoms are a combination of all the above types of Epilepsy. This is the most difficult type of epilepsy and is incurable.
